Day One....Seasoned Traveler Already!
So Yesterday started slow as we checked in the morning after our flight at 2am! Super tired, but our room was air conditioned and we had our own bathroom, little comforts that we may miss later on during our trip. Woke around 1030, excited and confused, "Where are we?" "Oh Yeah! We 're in THAILAND!!" Yay! Breakfast was wonderful! Club sandwich with egg, bacon, ham, cheddar, cucumbers, onion and mayo. Side of super fresh fruit (papaya, banana, pineapple, watermelon), and OMG coffe...or should I say "Gah-fair".. (I've been practicing my thai language and am getting good at it). All for around 160bt = $5. That's actually a little pricey for thailand. Then off to expore! We walked for 3 hours up and down crowded streets of people, clothes, trinkets, cats, dogs, and food....Oh the smells on the streets are amazing! So many people cooking on the sidewalk, so many poeple to squeeze through. We haven't tried the street food yet, want to get our tummies acclimated first. But maybe today we will. Thought we made it all the way to Khoasam Rd (a popular tourist street seen in the movie "The Beach"), but after getting back to our guest room, realized that we were one street shy of it...So, of course back we went later in the night...But I haven't gotten to that part yet... We met up with a friend of James' brother who lives here in Bangkok, and he gave us a super tour. We had to take a taxi to get to him and apparently they drive on the left side of the street here, but our taxi driver thought it best to use both right and left lanes! AH! I kept my head down. We went to a few super malls, huge fashion malls, BMK, Kelly would LOVE it here! Brian wouldn't get very far. We took a fast train transit, also a local bus, ended up at an Irish Pub for a beer that cost 40bt = $1.10! Saw a gogo club (didn't go in) and when we made it back to Khosan Rd, Jack said farewell, we tuckered him out. At 10:30pm we walked up and down the crowded street. Lots of music and dancing and seling of goods. James leaned the secret of bargaining is to make the lady laugh. One girl asked him if he had a brother, "good for me, you lady carry money and you get price..." He got a wallet for 7$ (I think we could have got it cheaper, but she was nice). We had forgotten to bargain earlier in the day, walked away after buying 2 watches for 300bt = $10, without even trying! Seriously should have been $1 each, but we were confused with the baht conversion... As we walked home, 2 miles away, we heard music from a little hole in the wall..."Blues Music" the door said. Walked into a bar with 6 guys jamming to American blues. They rocked! Then, walking down the street I heard more music down an alley.. Ignoring James' disdain, I said "karokee?" Nope, A Thai family dancing and eating and drinking. They saw us peek around the corner and smiled big grins and ran over and pulled us in and immediately started taking pictures of us and handing us food "you try this!" So spicy!! We did try oysters with hot sauce, which got us screams and laughing. White people apparently don't like hot oysters... 11:30pm. Walked back to out room and met a few Germans. Family trip, mom, dad, daughter (21yrs) and her boyfriend. Got noodle soup and sat up with them in the outdoor air until 4:30am!! I swear the time just breezed by. Great conversation, nice people. Super tired today! We are on our way to get an overnight train to Chaing Mai for tomorrow. And we still need to see the Emerald Buddah, Jim Thompson house and the Floating Market! Maybe we will try to post some photos next time...? Love you all!

I have a question: Why wouldn't I get very far?? I can get anywhere I want, I just can't always see over others heads to check out where I'm going.
ReplyDeleteGetting invited in for dinner with the Thai family sounds pretty neat.
Kelly says hello and that she wishes she could be shopping with you. Buy lots of awesome stuff she says.
I'm so excited for you too! Can't wait to keep hearing more. Sounds awesome so far. BTW, I'm jealous of the shopping. If you find a great deal and you think I'll love it, buy it. I'll pay you back for sure. Miss you already!
ReplyDeleteMBK!! YEAH!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd this is Heather posting about the MBK.
ReplyDeleteThe street noodles and egg rolls on Khoasan Rd are bomb diggidy! And the thai iced tea is bags! I miss eating there :(
ReplyDeleteSee if you guys can check out the flee market in Bangkok, I think its only on the weekends but its HUGE and they have mini bunnies...yes, bunnies that stay mini, they're adorable. And dont forget the ping pong show...creapy and nasty but totally worth the experience. Just ask for the red light district :) hehe
